what is this?

Boxaroo is taking over 1950 Mass Ave in Cambridge for an evening! We’ll be hosting The Perfect Heist and 100 Earth Days. As with all of our Live Puzzle Events, many teams will come together to experience a puzzle adventure simultaneously. Compete to complete the story first, uncover the secret solution -- or just aim to finish in time!

We recommend finding 5 friends to make a full team of 6, but we'll also do our best to pair smaller groups with each other for maximal fun!

You can buy tickets here. If you have more questions, please see our FAQ.

Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is this?

A live puzzle event typically contains a ballroom of teams simultaneously attempting to solve a mystery at once. While not necessarily competitive, there is usually a goal to achieve before time runs out. Expect interactions with actors, pencil-and-paper puzzles, pencil-less and paper-less puzzles, more than 60 participants, and a constant bustle of motion and buzz of excitement!

Is this family friendly?

We will not have an age requirement for this event, so younger participants are welcome to attend. We generally recommend ages 13 and up, as there are a lot of puzzles and the event runs longer than a typical escape room.

Will there be food or drinks?

We’re not planning to have food or drinks for sale at the event; if you’re playing both events, we recommend patronizing one of the many fine establishments around Porter Square in between for dinner; there are a lot of reasonably quick dining options a short distance from the venue, and we’ve allocated 90 minutes for dinner in between!

Are you selling merch?

Yes! We have a limited number of shirts for sale for each event. Each shirt is $20 if ordered online ahead of time, and $25 if purchased at the venue. They're super comfy, and will leave all your friends super jealous.

We’ll also be bringing a selection of Boxaroo merch to the event; while you can’t preorder these, if you want any of our updated pins, or need a nice cozy hat to get you through the next 3 days of Boston winter, we’ll have a small table at the event! (Credit preferred, cash also accepted.)

How difficult are the puzzles?

The Perfect Heist is great for all levels of puzzlers. If you've done a couple of escape rooms before, it'll be a healthy challenge. 100 Earth Days is designed to be a tougher puzzle adventure, targeted towards individuals who have done longer, multi-hour "puzzle hunts". We've put together a rough scale here of where we think our experiences lie in terms of difficulty:

I think I’ve done this before! Should I play again?

It’s entirely possible you’ve played these before! We ran both events during Warehouse Weekend in 2020, 100 Earth Days for RECON in 2022, and Perfect Heist had a public debut in 2018. Both events have since had updates to puzzles, flow, and props, but we only recommend replaying the events if you really want to play them again with your friends, or are confident you don’t remember anything, since the majority of the content remains the same.

Teams

Is this event played in teams?

Yes! There will be room for roughly 15 teams of 6 people each; we recommend finding 5 friends and signing up together. We’re offering a $15 discount for teams that buy tickets as a group. (Buying tickets as a group also guarantees that team members don’t miss out on ticket sales!)

What if I don't have a team?

Solo solvers are welcome at our events! While we recommend finding a team to join ahead of time, you can also buy up to 3 individual tickets in one purchase, and we will match you up with other unattached individuals or teams that are short a member or two.

If I don’t have a full team of 6, will you split us up?

Any ticket purchases on the same order will be assigned to the same team.

What if my team has 7 members?

Unfortunately, we're limiting our tables to teams of 6. We've found this to provide the best experience for our players. We recommend finding 5 more friends and registering a second team. Losers buy drinks!

What if my team has 4 or 5 members?

We recommend finding a new friend, and taking advantage of our team rate. You can purchase the full team option without having finalized your team, but then it’s on you to fill the team.

What if my group wants to buy tickets individually?

If your team wants to pay for tickets individually, that’s also fine! We have a field for “Team Name” on the checkout page, and as long as your team ends up with exactly 6 players and a unique team name, we’ll be able to match you all up. If you don’t specify during checkout, you can email us with a list of all the members of your team.

Note that if your team ends up with fewer than 6 players, we may need to split your team up when assigning tables; we’ll try to keep your group together to the best of our ability, but the only way to 100% guarantee that your team plays together is to buy tickets together.

Help! I am buying tickets for my entire team but we don’t have a team name??

We’d be delighted to provide a Boxaroo-assigned team name on the day of the event, or beforehand! We’re pretty proud of our carefully curated list of puns. Any teams comprised of multiple groups can also expect to be assigned a team name from our arsenal.

Ticketing

Do I need to pre-register, or can I buy tickets day of?

For this event, we require registration ahead of time. Unless they sell out, ticket sales will be open until 12 pm the day before the event. But we'd suggest not waiting too long to register…

What is your refund policy?

Unfortunately, we are not offering refunds for this event. However, we understand that emergencies happen. Please contact us and we’ll work with you if something drastic happens.

If an event is sold out, we’ll help you coordinate with anyone on the waitlist who is looking for tickets.

What if I'm late?

Please don't be late! Mob bosses and red planets wait for no one, and the show will start without you! Doors will open 15 minutes before each event.

The Venue

What’s the best way to get here?

The Cambridge Masonic Lodge is a short 3-minute walk from the Porter Square T Station, on the Red Line. We don’t recommend driving. Street parking is minimal and the Porter Square Shopping Center’s parking lot is very strict about enforcing their “shoppers only” clause.

How accessible is the venue?

The Cambridge Masonic Lodge is an old, historic building that is unfortunately not fully accessible at this time. The main entrance is up half a flight of stairs and both events take place in the ballroom, which requires descending one full flight of stairs to the basement. There are restrooms located in the basement and the entire event will take place in/around the ballroom; some interactions may involve a few stairs but if this is a problem for you please let us know and we will make alternate arrangements for your team.

Will there be a coat check?

We’re not sure yet. We recommend leaving large suitcases and strollers, etc. elsewhere as we can’t guarantee the ability to store these things during the event; coats and small bags can be kept at your table.

Others

Do I need to fill out a waiver?

We won’t need you to fill out a waiver, but we’ll be asking everyone who attends to fill out a photo release form so that we can have our super cool event photographer take pictures for social media. If you have any questions about this, please contact us.

Can I take pictures or video at the event?

Sure! We would love for you to take photos and share your memories. There will also be a professional photographer on hand taking photos throughout the event. We simply ask, as we do with our escape rooms, no pictures of the puzzles themselves. That way we can keep things spoiler free for all of our puzzling friends! Please put away your portable, handheld document scanner, Kevin…

Is a hot dog a sandwich?

No.

I have more questions! Help!

Hey, that's not a question... BUT we would be happy to help you out! Please shoot an email to hello@boxaroo.me and one of our friendly staff members will answer your more obscure questions.
